TennisGear Events Wrap Up

Back on home soil, we had some very exciting juniors matches of our own at both our Morningside and Nudgee College centres on the second last weekend of last month. On Sunday the 21^st of November, the future tennis champs of Australia gathered to enjoy some sunshine and a little friendly competition against their fellow TennisGear players. The matches ran from 8am in the morning all the way through until 6pm in the evening, so it was a big day for everyone! We had 188 entries into the championships ranging in age from our 6 year old players in the red ball division all the way up to our teens in the yellow ball comp out at Nudgee College. Over the course of the day, many juniors had some notable achievements and played some incredible tennis. However, for our coordinator on the day, Lizzie Pitts, her nominee for stand out performance was Spencer Blake. He played in the yellow ball finals for his age group and despite battling an injury, Spencer played through! What an absolute star!

Congratulations to all our winners as well as all of our players who took part in the Championships. The Junior Club Champs were a great success! A huge thank you to all the coaches who made the day run smoothly and to all the parents and spectators that came along to cheer on our juniors!

The Sunday after our Junior Club Champs, our TennisGear Adults followed suit and battled it out for top spot. Our Adult Club Champs took place at Shaw Park Tennis Centre on the 28^th of November and it was another big day for our TennisGear players. Much like our juniors, the turnout was amazing! We had 74 players in the singles draws and 34 teams in the doubles draw!

Following our Club Championships, TennisGear hosted Super League finals at both our Shaw Park and Nudgee College venues. After a few nights of unfortunately timed rain, we eventually got some results for our players!

This season of Super League ran from July right through until December. In the Southside competition, TennisGear had 48 teams playing for our Morningside Centre in the Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday leagues. The finals for this comp were held at Queensland Tennis Centre on the last weekend in November.

TennisGear also had 112 teams from our Roy Emerson and Shaw Park centres in the Northside competition playing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturday afternoons. The finals for Division 8, 9 and 10 plus our Junior Leagues were played at Nudgee College on the 27^th of November. Our players battled it out for over 3 hours in an attempt to take out the title of their divisions. They were rewarded for their efforts with a big pizza party and a trophy ceremony! The rest of our finals were held at Shaw Park Tennis Centre across 2 weeks (after some persistent rain) where the Pro Shop team sizzled away a storm on the grill for our finals celebrations.

We also want to congratulate one of our very own, James Van Niekerk, on his achievements this season. James participated in the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night competitions. He played in the Super Reserve division on Tuesday and Wednesday and in Division 1 on Thursday. We’re very proud of James for winning the crown on all 3 nights! This is definitely a record. Well done Jimmy The Jet!
