Junior Hot Shots Coaching Programs

MLC HOTSHOTS GROUP LESSONS

Hot Shots tennis is Tennis Australia’s official starter program.  It is designed to let children develop technically and tactically in an environment that is always fun and exciting.  Aimed at children aged 4-12 years old, it uses modified courts, racquets and balls to keep things fun and easy.  The program is based on a “learning through play” philosophy where children serve, rally and score.  Click here to download a MLC Tennis Hot Shots fact sheet. At TennisGear our experienced coaching team run a tailored program designed to develop each child’s game in a fun, encouraging and social environment.

MLC Hot Shots: The Three Stages

The Three Stages banner

MLC Tennis Hot Shots is split into three stages:

  • Red
  • Orange
  • Green

There is also an optional Launch Pad stage for young players aged between three and five-years-old. Children progress from one stage to the next when they are ready. This ensures that children learn at their pace and will ultimately make the transition to using a yellow ball on a full-size court when they are fully prepared.

Launch Pad stage (ages 3–5)

Launch Pad The Launch Pad stage introduces children to tennis through games and fun activities. Children learn the basics of tennis including how to rally. At TennisGear we run Mini-Red programs as part of our own unique launch pad program.Court size: variable
Tennis ball:
red ball (25% compression)
Recommended racquet size: 19–23 inches

Red stage (ages 5–8)

The Red stage is for beginners. The red ball is larger than a yellow ball and doesn’t bounce as high (just 25 per cent compression), making it a breeze for even the youngest players to hit it comfortably. The courts and nets used in the Red stage are much smaller and easier for kids to move around.

Court size: 3 m × 8.23 or
6 m × 10.97 m
Tennis ball: red ball (25 per cent compression)
Recommended racquet size: 21–23 inches

Red Stage

Orange stage (ages 8–10)

Orange Stage After mastering the Red stage, children move on to the Orange stage where the ball bounces a little higher (50 per cent compression) and the court is a bit bigger.

Court size: 6.4 m × 18.29 m
Tennis ball: orange ball (50 per cent compression)
Recommended racquet size: 23–25 inches

Green stage (ages 9+)

The ball used in the Green stage has a higher compression (75 per cent of a yellow tennis ball) and children play on a full-size court.

Court size: 10.97 m × 23.78 m (full court)
Tennis ball: green ball (75 per cent compression)
Recommended racquet size:25–27 inches

Green Stage

Our Hot Shots Group Lessons cater to all students from beginner to intermediate player standards aged 4 to 12 years old.  In these lessons students use low compression balls and a modified court to begin to explore  the fundamental and perceptual motor skills and tennis basics.  As the children progress and start to enjoy learning tennis skills, emphasis moves to learning to score and playing the game of tennis.  These sessions are 45 minutes in duration.  Our average ratio is one coach per 6 players.  We have special classes for our younger Red Ball players called Mini-Red. These classes are 30 minutes in duration with a one to four class size ratio.
